¶ Migrate ML token from ERC20 to Mintlayer Mainnet
This guide will walk you through the process of migrating your ML tokens from the Ethereum/ERC20 network to the Mintlayer network. Please read each step carefully, as this process is irreversible and out of our control.
Security: It's highly recommended to use a clean and unplugged system to generate your Mintlayer address.
Irreversible Process: Once your ML tokens are burned on the Ethereum network, the action cannot be undone.
Responsibility: You are solely responsible for this migration, so make sure to double-check all details and follow instructions carefully.
¶ Pre-requisites
- Access to your ERC20 ML tokens.
- Mojito Browser Extension OR
mintlayer-wallet-address-generatortool installed on your system.
Note: As of today, the mobile version of Mojito does not support the Mintlayer network. We are actively working on this feature, so please stay tuned for official announcements.
¶ Step 1: Generate a Mintlayer Mainnet Wallet Address
To generate a Mintlayer Address, there are two methods available. One option is using the Mojito Wallet, and the other, particularly suitable for cold storage, involves using the mintlayer-wallet-address-generator command.
¶ Generate an address using Mojito Wallet
To begin, ensure that the Mojito Wallet browser extension is installed and up-to-date in your browser. Supported browsers currently include Firefox and Chrome. You can find the specific links for your browser here.
The next step involves generating a seed phrase, if you haven't already done so. This same seed phrase can be used to generate both Bitcoin and Mintlayer addresses.
To obtain a mainnet address, simply select Mintlayer.
Note: While it is possible to recover a 24-word seed from Mojito, the default configuration is a 12-word seed. This seed can also be imported into other wallets, such as the command-line wallet or the node GUI.
¶ Generate an address using the Command Line
- Open a terminal window.
- Type the following command:
user$ mintlayer-wallet-address-generator
- Follow the on-screen instructions to generate your Mintlayer mainnet address. The output will look something like this:

You can recognize a Mintlayer mainnet address because it starts with mtc1, while a Mintlayer testnet address starts with tml1.
Important! Make sure to save your seed phrase in a secure location.
¶ Step 2: Burn ERC20 ML Tokens
- Go to Mintlayer Token Migration Interface or interact directly with the smart contract to burn your ERC20 ML tokens.
- Specify the destination address (the Mintlayer mainnet address generated in Step 1). In this example, it's "mtc1qyy6ggpq966pxrgdeq3ak2zza3hxrezgpycv6nm0".
¶ Step 3: Confirm and Wait
- After burning the ERC20 tokens, they will be available on the Mintlayer mainnet at the specified address upon its launch. The process might take up to 24 hours.
Note: You can repeat the process as many times as you want with as many addresses as you want.
